Frequently Asked Questions About May Convocation

Am I required to participate in the graduation ceremony?

All graduates are invited and encouraged to participate, but attendance is not mandatory. 

Do I need to notify anyone that I intend to participate in the College of ACES Convocation Ceremony?

Yes, advanced registration for the College of ACES ceremony will be required by all graduates who wish to participate.  Please visit the appropriate link (undergraduate or graduate student) to find out how to register to participate, order your cap and gown, order and receive tickets for your guests, and receive information on the additional steps necessary to participate.

Are tickets required? Where do I get tickets?

Tickets will be required for all guests, including babies, toddlers and small children, attending the ACES Convocation ceremony.  Graduates and faculty participants will not need a ticket for the ceremony.

Tickets for the ceremony are required.  Check back for information about ticket distribution.  

You must register to participate in the ceremony before you can receive your tickets.

The Dean of the College of ACES presides over the College of ACES Convocation ceremony.  All graduates, regardless of degree, are individually recognized.

How long does the ACES Convocation Ceremony last?

The ACES Convocation ceremony should last approximately two hours.  Please make arrangements to attend the entire ceremony as those who leave the building will not be permitted to return.

Is the ACES Convocation Ceremony accessible to the disabled?

Yes.  For attendees in need of assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers, it is suggested that these devices are brought to the ceremony from home or local leasing services.

Instructions for special needs:

Guests in wheelchairs, or for whom walking is difficult, may be dropped off outside the ceremony location.  Inside the building, ushers will help direct you to designated seating areas.

Graduates with disabilities who require special assistance to fully participate in the ACES Convocation ceremony should email schmallr@illinois.edu, visit 115 ACES Library or call 217-333-9729, prior to the ceremony to make necessary arrangements.

Is there a rehearsal?  How will I know what to do when I arrive at the ceremony?

There is no rehearsal for the ceremony.  Faculty members will assist students in lining up for the processional.

Who is eligible to participate in the ACES Convocation Ceremony?

Convocation is not a certification of graduation, but rather a ceremony that celebrates academic achievements.  This ceremony is intended for May 2017 and August 2017 graduates who have not previously participated in an ACES Convocation ceremony.

Recipients of doctoral degrees must have deposited their dissertation in the Graduate College Thesis Office by the current year's deadline (April 21, 2017 by 5:00 p.m.) in order to participate in the ACES May 2017 Convocation ceremony.
